Quick takeaways: I first encountered the Four Holy Beasts, Qinglong, Zhuque, Baihu, Xuanwu, through my readings of cultivation novels, and spent a long time working out what each one represented before feeling confident I understood the tradition. During my exploration of the Four Guardians of Chinese mythology, I came across the Four Heavenly Kings, and […]
Quick takeaways: Of the four great celestial guardians of East Asian cosmology, Genbu is the one who most consistently surprises first-time readers. The Azure Dragon is expected. The Vermilion Bird is spectacular. The White Tiger is fearsome. But the Black Tortoise, a great tortoise intertwined with a serpent, slow and ancient and northern, governing winter […]
Quick Takeaways: About three years into reading cultivation fiction seriously, I picked up a Western progression fantasy novel on a recommendation from a forum thread comparing the two genres. Within a hundred pages I understood why the comparison existed, and within a few hundred more I understood why it was only partially correct. The surface […]
Quick takeaways: The pairing of sun and moon as the celestial image of yin and yang is so intuitive that most people who encounter it never question whether it is actually correct. The sun blazes and dominates, the moon is cool and reflective. The sun governs the day, the moon governs the night. The sun […]
Quick takeaways: Cultural traditions are too varied, too internally complex, too resistant to generalization for sweeping claims to survive close examination. The dragon is the near exception. Almost Every human culture that has left a substantial mythological record has produced a dragon figure. Not a figure that looks identical to dragons elsewhere, not a creature […]
Quick takeaways: Suzaku is one of the Four Symbols of East Asian cosmology, a figure that China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam each received, adapted, and honoured in ways that are simultaneously consistent and culturally distinct. The first time I encountered a Vermilion Bird was not in the cultivation novel, but in a Chinese TV series, […]
Quick takeaways: The yin-yang symbol is one of the most widely recognized images in the world and one of the most thoroughly misunderstood. After spending years reading about Eastern culture, Philosophy, Daoism, and cultivation fiction, I have encountered it more times than I can count, and I found out it is one of the most […]
Quick takeaways One of the earliest wuxia dramas I saw described a master healer pressing a single finger to a young disciple’s wrist and immediately knowing which of his meridians were blocked, which were damaged, and which were open but running with impure qi. The scene was written as though this examination was as straightforward […]
Quick takeaways: Early in my reading of A Record of a Mortal’s Journey to Immortality, there is a scene where Han Li examines another cultivator’s dantian and determines, from its condition alone, everything he needs to know about that person’s cultivation level, technique history, and remaining lifespan. The scene is written with the matter-of-fact precision […]
