Three words Mana, Chi & Aether from three unconnected parts of the world, used more or less interchangeably in modern fantasy to mean magical fuel. The obvious question is whether that interchangeability is lazy or whether these traditions were genuinely circling the same idea. I went in expecting to argue the first one. The etymology […]
Open any current romantasy release calendar and dragons are everywhere: bonded to war college cadets, guarding fated mates, showing up on covers in numbers that would have looked strange five years ago. Publishers Weekly reported that Circana BookScan dubbed 2023 “the year of romantasy,” reflecting how quickly the category had moved from a loose reader […]

Most lists of the twelve Olympian Gods read like a filing cabinet. God of war. God of the sea. God of wisdom. Those labels are technically accurate and almost useless, because they flatten figures whose real domains contradict themselves in interesting ways. Apollo brings both plague and healing. Artemis protects childbirth and kills women in […]
If dark fantasy creates dread without leaning on jump scares, gore, or the sudden monster reveal, why does it still feel so unsettling? Horror gets its dread from a specific kind of uncertainty, whether the strange thing happening has a natural explanation or a supernatural one, and the tension of not knowing. Dark fantasy doesn’t […]
Here’s the thing that took me embarrassingly long to understand: the Chaos in Greek Mythology doesn’t mean chaos. Not the way you and I use the word. Not disorder, not confusion, not a mess. Ancient Greek χάος(Khaos) meant something much stranger and much more specific, and once you see it, the whole Greek creation story […]
I read Fourth Wing in two sittings, which tells you something before I say anything else. It’s a well-built page-turner: a propulsive opening, a dragon relationship worth caring about, and a sustained enemies-to-lovers tension that Rebecca Yarros handles better than most of the genre manages. Then I sat with why it worked on me that […]
What Kind Of Dark Fantasy Creatures Makes The Fantasy Dark Skeletons in an army. A permanently grey sky. A body count that would embarrass a war epic. None of that is what actually makes fantasy dark, and you can prove it to yourself: plenty of straightforwardly heroic fantasy is soaked in blood and still isn’t […]
Quick Takeaways: The word romantasy predates every romantasy novel currently on your shelf by nearly a century. A 1928 advertisement for Kaufmann’s department store in Pittsburgh described a china pattern’s decorative imagery, lovers fleeing across a bridge, turtle doves, as romantasies, a word coined independently and completely unrelated to fiction. That coincidence isn’t the point […]
Quick Takeaways: I’ve written extensively on my blog about the Jade Emperor, his court, his family, his powers ranked and compared against Zeus and against the Buddha. What I haven’t properly done is introduce the three figures who technically outrank him, and who most readers who’ve spent real time in Chinese mythology have still barely […]
